Teemu to Retire??

Well according to this article it is looking that way. The 37 year old who had 48 goals last season and 1041 games played in his entire career with 540 goals and 1135 points had this to say:

“Hockey has been a career of life for me, but there are so many other things in life,” said Selanne. “Winning the Cup crowned that career. What scares me most is if I decide to keep on playing for something else than my motivation and hockey.”

Ya know at least the guy is honest. Could we really blame him for retiring after such a long career capped off with winning the Stanley Cup? He’s 37 and has young children…maybe it is time for him to hang them up…and move onto something else.

”Many have asked me, ‘why not take those millions?’…but it is not
about that,” said Selanne. “I have never played for money, so I will not play for it now. If hockey is not fun, I will do something else.”

I absolutely adore Teemu Selanne and seeing him hoist the Cup was one of the greatest things I have ever witnessed. That quote above about money makes me respect him so much more. But, however he and Scott Niedermayer are still stringing us along with a decision…Teemu had this to say:

”I do not think the decision comes out just like with a snap of a finger,” he said. “It is taking shape, though. I somewhat know what I will do. I just want to make sure it is the right decision. August is usually the month when I get back on the ice. That has not tempted me, yet. It is a sign of some sort. On the other hand, there still is a month until the start of the training camp and I may get the spark.”

Let’s hope that Niedermayer and Selanne stay one more year…there aren’t many guys like them left.

Young guys taking over.

So, while I was working today, I was e-mailing one of my friends and I asked him to help me come up with something to write about. His assignment to me seemed simple enough.

Why do you think the young guys are taking over hockey while the veterans are starting to call it quits?

And, no offense to my friend who asked me this…but he has very limited knowledge of hockey, and what it is all about…but I will get to that later. I wanted to keep this just to me…but, I had to enlist the help of some of my lovely HLOG. The lovely CapsChick came up with the easiest answer. She said that well the game has gotten faster. This isn’t the same game that it was before. It’s not the game they grew up playing. This is a game about speed and skill. It’s not a game about who can hit the hardest or who can fight the best (even though our defending Stanley Cup Champs could prove me wrong). Sherry said basically the same thing. She said that they are getting older and it’s harder for them to keep up.

Steph seemed to think along the same lines as me.

I don’t know….it’s kind of sad though, I mean, I love seeing the kids able to step up, but seeing all the guys you grew up watching retiring is sad… And it’s funny the way they’re adding more pads and cutting down on fighting, you’d think it would make people end up playing longer, but people do seem to be retiring at earlier ages.

Thinking of guys like Scott Niedermayer and Teemu Selanne retiring makes me frustrated. Scott seems to think that the NHL has nothing left to offer him. And, Teemu probably wants to go out on top. But, I think the game needs them. Anyway, that’s really off topic…another day perhaps.

I don’t know that the game is actually being “taken over” by the young guys…although I suppose you could look at it that way. Veterans play a part in the game just like the young guys do. You need the veteran guys on your team. Look at the Ducks. Scott Niedermayer, Chris Pronger, Teemu Selanne, and Brad May, older guys who played an important role in winning the Stanley Cup. Would the Ducks have won the Cup without them? No, they would not. You need veterans to lead, on and off the ice. And, the veterans will always a spot in the game.

So there ya go buddy. I made my midnight deadline…enjoy and I expect a critique…be gentle ;)

It’s about that time!!

So, after waiting for what feels like an eternity it’s time for the Stanley Cup Finals to begin. I am honestly so excited. I still think it is weird for this series to start on Memorial Day. I am heading to the Cincinnati Reds game today at 1:15 they are playing Pittsburgh Pirates who are on a three game winning streak and we’re on a SIX game losing streak…yeah that’s right SIX games. Woot. Ugh, I hate Pittsburgh sports teams. Anyway I suppose I will go but I am very excited for the game tonight!!!!!!!!!! And, for a great laugh head over to my buddies blog, A View from the Cheap Seats she has Jason Spezza and Teemu Selanne going head to head!

Go Reds!!

UPDATE So my Reds won…4-0 I believe…but my beloved Ryan Freel did go down he was taken off in an ambulance for tests…all the best to him and his family!

The Ducks Could Not Buy a Goal

Pretty much thanks to Peter Budaj. He was like a brick wall last night. I have talked about him before but I’m pretty sure he was channeling his inner Martin Brodeur. It was absolutely incredible. The Ducks were short handed and they kept throwing shot after shot after shot at him and he stopped everything. I absolutely could not believe it. The Ducks I do believe need to step it up a notch it seems they have just been coasting along. And, the line juggling needs to stop. It’s almost playoff time…don’t juggle your lines now. Although, I will say this I was happy to see Penner on a line with Getzlaf and Perry…at least for the first period…haha.
I was shocked with the way Teemu reacted when the ref made a bad call when the puck was backhanded off the ice and into the stands. I know the guys chirp at the refs and yell and what not. But, Teemu seemed genuinly outraged and kept yelling at the ref and eventually was sent to the locker room. I could not believe it. Teemu has always seemed calm, cool, and collected to me when I have watched him at least. I suppose I was wrong…(hey it wouldn’t be the first time!)
Oh and for the first time in a long time…the entire line up was healthy…so hopefully we will be seeing the first half of the season Ducks real soon…actually really really soon because as of right now the San Jose Sharks are only one point behind the Ducks…so get your act together!!
Tonight, I’m hoping that the Jackets can beat the Blue’s and that the Sharks beat the Preds…even though if they do…they will be ahead of the Ducks…but that’s ok because I hate the Preds more than I love the Ducks!
